Thailand, "The Land of Colored Shirts."
Thailand has always been a colorful country, with it's beautiful color silks; traditional tribal colored clothing costumes; and their classical color dress. Every major holiday seems to have a specially designed and colorful shirt to be worn during festival time.
Now you have to be careful what color of shirts you wear. Primarily solid color shirts YELLOW, RED, and PINK have meaning. And at which time and location you wear it is the issue.
Three years ago, YELLOW, was prime color to wear for government workers and anyone wishing to show support to his Royal Highness,King Bhumibol Adulyadej. That was his chosen color. The Royal Seal was embroderied on the shirt pocket or near that area of pocketless shirts. Now government workers wear "PINK" shirts with the Royal Seal. I don't know the reason why Pink was picked, but that will need some researching.
Then the political unrest started and the "People's Alliance for Democracy," PAD adopted yellow shirts as a show of unity and became known as the "YELLOW SHIRTS." The PAD consists of middle and upper-class Bangkokians and Southerners, supported by the conservative elite factions of the Thai Army, some leaders of Democrat Party, and leaders of state-enterprise labor unions.
Next came the opposition and was called the "United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship," UDD which adopted red shirts and now known as the "RED SHIRTS." This party supports the outsed former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra who draws his support from the North, Central, and Northeast areas of Thailand.
I am not picking sides or getting into the political idealogy but I just use the rationale that it is just like our American Republican and Democratic Parties, and the calling of the "RED" or "BLUE" states back home.
Recently, in the Thai news a gentleman was killed while eating dinner at a restaurant stemming the fact he was wearing a YELLOW shirt and a group UDD (Red Shirts) also eating there attacked and killed him.
Now, that scares me...... Since "BLUE" is my favorite color, I know what I will wear a lot of besides black and white tourist type T-Shirts. Being a Farang in Thailand might help..........I wonder if RED SHORTS are OK?
