Driving in Nakhon Phanom
I was debating about writing this story of driving in my home area. Living outside of town, 13 kilometers, you see so many wrong things that you accept as normal.
In this area, I would say that 50% of the drivers of motorcycles and autos/trucks are driving illegally without a Thai Drivers License, and definitely without any insurance. No Liability insurance requirements, let me take that back. There is some sort of insurance on your vehicle annual registration. If you have a loan on your vehicle or drive a new vehicle you are required to have insurance. Many vehicle homicides the person flees the scene. It scares me to think how my life could be ruined in an event of a vehicle accident, even if the cause was not my fault.
Here is recent drive downtown along the Mekong River.

Downtown parking, I should say lack of parking, causes many traffic problems. Dodging motorcycles or Tuk Tuk's (motorized Samlors) and still trying to get into a space is a joke. They have parking designated on one side of most streets and changes on specific days. That doesn't stop them from parking on both sides and now the narrow street has become one lane. I always try and avoid certain streets and have areas that I prefer to park.
Having our truck really makes our time more enjoyable, being able to go were we want and when we want. Just takes lots of patient.

Parking, like many things in this country, is an afterthought. Only large stores like TESCO Lotus and Makro have parking areas. Of course in an accident the person with money, that is, you/we foreigners will always be blamed. I've told my kids to question any and all police reports if we are seriously injured and/or killed whether at home, on the road, or traveling in another city. Whew, I feel much better now. My R&R is over. Enjoyed your house photos.
